Can we help the Poor & Needy (Covid - 19)?

Yes, am sure we all can do our bit. Given that most of the India is under complete lock down, i am unsure how many of us can go out and volunteer for this noble cause. The only way out is to contribute to the relief funds or noble causes furthered by NGOs.

Given the vast expanse of population spread across large land mass in India, the help has to go in from the formal (Government) and informal (NGOs) means. This is the only way the poor and needy of all kind can be attended to.

I have put together a few of these initiatives. I would encourage each one of you to evaluate these and contribute in your capacity against any or all of these. Every contribution that we make will touch a needy soul or family and help them wade through these troubled times.

1. Thamate Centre for Rural Empowerment: To support the many Manual Scavengers who put their lives in grave danger to keep Namma Bengaluru clean. This is a great opportunity to say "Thank You" to these brave men and their families. A 25 day survival kit for a family costs INR 2290 only. Post your donations, please drop a note to Dr. KB Obalesha, Thamate (obaleshakb@gmail.com) & Rohinee, S3IDF (Rohinee@s3idf.org). They will get back to you on how your donations were put to good use. Thank you Aditya Nataraja for bringing this to my attention.

Thank you Prabha Mohan for bringing this to my notice. The link has details and payment links as well. Many of these donations are exempted under 80G & 501(c)(3)

There are multiple causes that you could associate yourself to:

i)Hasiru Dala has identified ~1000 vulnerable waste-pickers’ families (no BPL/ration card, no public housing, no predictable income) in 6 cities/towns in Karnataka (Bengaluru, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Davanagere, Hubli/Dharawad) who need immediate support.

ii)Give India: Immediate cash to labourers to compensate for their loss of wages and help them provide basic provisions for their families. The unemployed individuals have been duly verified by GiveIndia.

iii)Milaap: There are several individuals and organisations that are helping different sections of society be raising funds. Milaap has collated all these initiatives under one site for you to go through and select for donating.

iv)PharmEasy: Doctors, nurses and hospital staff are relentlessly working round the clock on the frontline against the COVID-19 outbreak, risking their lives to safeguard ours! Gift them an N95 mask or as many as you like and PharmEasy shall pledge one for every N95 mask you gift!

v)Help India: Daily wage workers are without work or government relief and therefore unable to be providers for their homes. The situation will get worse as the lockdown is not going to end any time soon.

vi)An individual initiativeby Sangitha and Shankar: Sangitha and Shankar have started this campaign to raise funds to equip the newly created COVID-19 ward at St. John’s Hospital, Bengaluru with ventilator beds, masks, and other necessary medical supplies. If 2,000 people contribute Rs. 250 each, the hospital can have one ventilator and enough masks to help the medical professionals stay protected

vii)Sattva Consulting:Sattva Consulting has been working on scalable and sustainable social impact solutions for a decade. They are using their network to find an effective strategy to support each other in combating the challenges posed on multiple fronts by the current coronavirus epidemic. You need to provide your details and they will get in touch with you.

viii)Gubbachi Government School Community: During the current lockdown situation, they are trying to support 125 migrant daily wage-earning families with a basic supply of rice, oil, dal, soaps, etc. These are families of children who learn with Gubbachi at their our various centres. They need approximately Rs. 2,000 per family of 4 members for a month.

ix)Rapid Response: Rapid Response is helping the poor in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh by providing relief supplies. The Safety & Hygiene Kits Costs Rs 600 which includes handwash liquid, soap, Dettol, phenol, bleaching powder, masks, kerchiefs and awareness pamphlets. The Dry Ration Relief Kits Costs Rs 1000 which includes rice, wheat, dal, cooking oil, sugar, salt and biscuit packets.

x)Feeding India: They have initiated the ‘Feed the Daily Wager’ project to provide food support to such families and to help them have a reliable supply of meals in the absence of employment opportunities. Each meal kit (for a family of 5) contains a combination of wheat flour, rice and two types of pulses that can be used to cook meals for the family for a week. Each kit for a family costs Rs. 500.

Then we have the CM Relief Fund (Karnataka) and PM-CARES.
Below are the details:

Its time we bring to the fore the spirit that Late John F Kennedy wanted his fellow countrymen to espouse.
Every contribution is critical in these tough times. Its time we stand by our sisters and brothers who are not as privileged and lucky as us. I cant emphasize enough bordering on being repetitive, please contribute!

A request to all who go through my blog: Please either retweet this or share it on your FB wall or Insta Handles. This will help these causes reach out to folks who are beyond my social network. Please add in to this list of causes that you think will be relevant.

I am sure when all of this is done and dusted, we will emerge as a stronger country and society filled with empathy, love and compassion for one and all.

Let humanity in you prevail!

Jai Hind.
